Reflections from Ecuadorian civil society

“Transparency and accountability aren’t just about delivering information or putting up a web page, they’re about ensuring people understand what is being done and said so that organizations and society in general can issue a social license to carry out any activity.”

“States (governments) are obligated to provide information to civil society and civil society has the obligation to demand it.”

“Civil society organizations’ links to issues like transparency and accountability should generate local capacities, be actors in their own future, and develop leaders with a new model for civil organization that isn’t attached to governments.”

“Prior to the TRACE program I thought about efficiency only in terms of contracts for exploration and exploitation in the petroleum industry. After the TRACE program, I question whether or not countries should continue seeing the extraction of natural resources as a source of funding; and, if they choose to do so, state planning should consider best management practices, as in Norway, in terms of separating financial resources earned from production from ecologically responsible exploitation, with the highest levels of international efficiency.”
