Students

We welcome and thank all those who are interested in our work and who would like to do work for us. Your engagement is important for us and we are trying to do our best to find ways to create possibilities for cooperation.

But, as we are a small secretariat we have very limited capacity outside our existing work priorities as bringing in help also mean extra work related to preparing tasks that a volunteer can work independently on, involving and teaching a person, supporting, following up, administer and overseeing etc.

Therefore we have identified some categories for work opportunities. Please see where you may fit in. But we also ask for your understanding that we may not always have capacity to involve all interested actors at all times.

Volunteer

  • Not able to commit to a particular amount of time or on steady time
  • Masters level
  • Experience working in voluntary organisations
  • Excellent working skills in English. (Sometimes we also need someone fluent/native in Spanish/French that are able to translate written material).
  • Able to work independently from home/university

What we may offer a volunteer:

  • If you are not able to commit to concrete time or hours it will be difficult for us to bring you into our day to day work processes. But, you may be able to do concrete and independent tasks where you could work independently from your home/university with regular contact with the secretariat.
  • You could help us with concrete ideas on what kind of tasks a volunteer can do
  • You could form a students working group that could work on specific topics to do awareness rising or hold public meetings.
  • Sometimes we need help for translation to Spanish or French. Sometimes we would need it quick/on the spot and need someone that can jump in and help us, other times we are able to plan what translations we need.
  • Investigating on a particular task in relation to a topic we are working on. (Students of law and accounting would be needed).
  • We may have need help in relation to a seminar or meeting
  • We are not always able to offer a volunteer job right now, but we may include you in our database of volunteers and may contact you again later. Let us know if you are interested in this.

What we may offer a voluntary internship:

Master student

PWYP Norway welcomes students with an interest in writing a thesis on issues of transparency and accountability in the oil, gas and mining sectors.

What we may offer a master student:

We advise students wanting to write a thesis on an issue related to transparency and accountability in the oil, gas and mining industry to first develop a clear research question together with their tutor at the university. Because of limited capacity we are not able to assist students in their initial and explorative phases, but will be happy to discuss concrete ideas.

In time, we hope to gather specific areas of interest for different actors and will post this online. The private sector (companies) may have questions/issues that they would like to have explored in a master thesis. Our government may have areas where they would like to know more. A researcher may be working on a relevant project or programme and may need an assistant to work on a relevant topic.

A few topics where more research is needed:

  • What is the value of transparency in international development?
  • What is the value of an EITI process in a resource rich developing country?
  • Comparing the EITI(link is external) reports to find differences in countries’ tax revenues
  • What are companies’ motivations for supporting and engaging with the EITI and tax payment disclosure (interviews, questionnaires, etc)
  • Comparison of the governance structures for various multi-stakeholder initiatives (EITI, KP, COST, MeTA, etc)
  • How are EITI reports being used? How can this information be leveraged for responsible expenditures?
  • How do EITI reports compare – what limitations are there in reading one next to another?
  • What is the value of country by country reporting?
  • How coherent is Norwegian government policy and actions on commitments on transparency and accountability in the extractive industries?
  • Issues related to the Norwegian Oil for Development initiative(link is external)
  • For computer science students with a social science bent: how an interactive data format for tax disclosure could look like, and how it could be used.
  • For computer science students with a social science bent: how global civil society uses modern technology and open source tools (and how the tools can be further improved)
